Rep. Mike Armanini announced on Mar. 25 a proposal to temporarily exempt sales tax on purchases of football equipment, including shoulder pads, gloves, and helmets, in Pennsylvania.
The proposed measure aims to provide financial relief to families who need to purchase gear for young players, especially as children outgrow their equipment frequently. The exemption would run from July 1 through Dec. 31 and is intended to coincide with Pittsburgh’s role as host of the 2026 National Football League Draft.
Armanini said he will work with other House Republicans to introduce a series of bills that would establish tax holidays for various goods and utilities. “Hopefully a tax holiday could give financial relief to families looking to outfit young players, particularly because those players’ sizes and needs change so frequently,” Armanini said.
The initiative estimates significant savings for shoppers in sales taxes related specifically to football equipment. According to the announcement, if the entire package of proposed bills is enacted, consumers across Pennsylvania could save more than $3 billion collectively.
Further information about the proposed holidays is available through Rep. Mike Armanini’s office.
