Senate Bill 1338, introduced by Sen. Wayne Langerholc Jr., has received unanimous support from the Senate Transportation Committee and will now proceed to the full Senate for consideration. The bill aims to establish an interstate compact for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.

Langerholc, who chairs the committee, highlighted the potential benefits of drones in terms of economic development, workforce, and education. “Unmanned Aircraft Systems or drones present a significant opportunity for our region by way of economic development, workforce and education,” he stated. “As we have made significant strides in this area, this legislation is the next step forward.”

The initiative has been supported by several key entities including Cambria County’s Department of Emergency Services, John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, Nulton Aviation Services, and Saint Francis University. These organizations have played a crucial role in advancing drone technology in the region. Recently, a federal grant was awarded to build a network of sensors that will enable Cambria County’s first responders to air-drop emergency medical supplies.

Langerholc explained that his legislation would create an interstate compact with states like Alaska that are at the forefront of UAS discovery. This compact would integrate Pennsylvania into a long-term collaboration focused on UAS safety, testing, training, and education. “My legislation will establish an interstate compact with states leading the discovery of UAS,” he noted.
