Senator Wayne Langerholc, Jr. has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at updating the statutory framework of the motivational boot camp program within the Department of Corrections at Quehanna Boot Camp. The initiative seeks to modernize the existing code while looking into cost-saving measures and potential revenue opportunities.
Known for achieving the lowest recidivism rates in the state, Quehanna Boot Camp is noted for its successful educational outcomes. The camp accounts for 30% of the GEDs achieved across all 24 institutions annually and offers vocational training that prepares participants for jobs that can sustain their families.
Though alternatives to incarceration have been recently updated by the commonwealth, the motivational boot camp statute has remained untouched by the General Assembly. “Quehanna Boot Camp and SCI Rockview are well-established, well-functioning, efficient facilities. They need to stay in operation,” stated Langerholc. “I stand with all the men and women who put on the uniform daily and will continue to work to find alternatives to closure.”
In early February, the Shapiro Administration signaled their intention to close Quehanna Boot Camp in Clearfield County.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections has scheduled a listening session on the proposed closure of the Quehanna Boot Camp for April 10 at 5 p.m. The session will take place at Community Alliance Church, located on Frenchville Karthaus Highway in Karthaus.
