Lock Haven University issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
In April, TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) peer mentor and senior Criminal Justice major Adriana Bumbarger was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Mid-Eastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MEAEOPP).
Bumbarger’s other academic and personal achievements helped her stand apart from other scholarship applicants. Bumbarger, who is set to graduate from LHU in December with a Bachelor of Science degree, recently attained a position with the Frederick Douglass Institute as a student mentor and facilitator for a town hall meeting on stereotypes and bias in the criminal justice system as a part of the “Let Me Read You Your Rights” program. She also received two additional scholarships, became certified in QPR Training and was selected as the treasurer for the Criminal Justice Club at LHU, in addition to her duties as a peer mentor for TRIO SSS.
She has been an active participant in TRIO SSS and in many organizations at LHU for the last three years, and has been fully committed not only to her academics, but to her community through her job at Strawberry Fields and her work as a youth leader at her church. The receipt of the MEAEOPP scholarship is a just recognition of all of her hard work and commitment of the course of her time at LHU, in TRIO SSS and serving others.
TRIO SSS serves 230 students at LHU, providing academic resources, financial support, professional development opportunities and social and cultural events. Community service projects are also built into the program each year. The goals of the TRIO SSS are to boost students’ grade point averages and increase their rates of remaining in college until graduation.
MEAEOPP is regional association of educational opportunity personnel from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Its mission is to advocate for the educational and cultural development of TRIO programs and all underrepresented and underserved individuals. MEAEOPP offers opportunities for professional growth for TRIO staff and through the creation and implementation of quality TRIO programming.
Each year, MEAEOPP awards a select number of TRIO students with scholarships of $1,000 to defer the cost of their college tuition. The winners of the scholarship are announced at the organization’s annual conference, which was held virtually this year.
