Fr. Ben Daghir’s Corner
When I first started seminary, I remember thinking about the most important advice from my Little League baseball coaches and my basketball coaches at Elk County Catholic. These coaches were rather clear - stick to the fundamentals and repeat them. I have reminded myself of these important lessons early on in my priesthood - stick to the fundamentals and repeat them. The fundamentals of a priest include prayer, the Eucharist, the sacrament of Confession, a keen focus on the parishioners, a healthy schedule, good friendships, smart nutrition plan, smart exercise program, good study habits, and to receive guidance and advice from those who are very experienced. Of course, the Church brilliantly articulates the fundamentals as prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (and you can see all the fundamentals that I have listed above fit into these three basic marks of a Christian). There are many other fundamentals but I believe that the main ideas listed above are sufficient for this bulletin article. There is no reason to keep my mentality as a young priest a secret. My philosophy right now is very simple: stick to the fundamentals and repeat them. -Fr. Daghir
