Lock Haven University issued the following announcement.
The Lock Haven University Foundation and LHU Alumni Association recently announced new volunteer board leadership, effective July 1, the start of the 2020-2021 fiscal year.
Steve Tasselli is the newly elected Chair of the LHU Foundation Board of Directors. Tasselli is a 1978 graduate of Lock Haven State College. He has served on the board since 2011.
Joining Tasselli in leadership positions are Bobby Maguire (Vice Chair), Ron Bowes ’66 (Treasurer) and Jim Berkebile ‘59 (Secretary). Tasselli, Maguire and Berkebile are newly elected into their roles, and Bowes was re-elected as the board’s treasurer, a position he has held since 2014.
The Foundation Board is comprised of three committees: Advancement, Finance and Governance. Newly elected committee chairs are Scott Culpepper ’71 (Advancement), Col. Bob Blose ’71 (Finance) and Jennifer Riter ’96 (Governance).
Despite the many challenges COVID-19 presented in the final quarter of the fiscal year, the Foundation also announced various areas of growth in key fundraising metrics for 2019-2020.
In all, 550 scholarships were awarded to more than 460 Lock Haven University students in the 2019-2020 school year, increases over the previous year of 17 percent and 5 percent, respectively. In total, more than $699,000 in scholarships was awarded to LHU students. A slight increase over 2018-2019 statistics.
Along with providing scholarships to students, another major focus for the Foundation is generating emergency resources to help LHU retain students experiencing financial hardship.
The Student Retention Fund was established by Dr. Robert Pignatello, LHU President in 2018. Since its inception the fund has accumulated over $91,000. These funds are used to help Lock Haven University students bridge gaps in their tuition that would otherwise jeopardize their enrollment, allowing them the opportunity to continue their education and earn their degree.
“This is an important time for Lock Haven University. Now, more than ever, we need to support the University and our students,” Tasselli said. “I, and the entire board, look forward to working with our campus community to help provide critical resources that our students need to be successful.”
The Lock Haven University Alumni Association Board of Directors also announced new leadership effective July 1. Dan Cruttenden is the board’s new president. Cruttenden , Class of 1973, takes over for Ed Wright ’71 who served as president for the past two years.
Joining Cruttenden in leadership roles are Amee Lewis Vance ‘75 (Vice President), Kyle Losch ’15 (Treasurer) and Malarie Hastings ’09 (Secretary).
A key highlight for the Alumni Association board in the 2019-2020 school year was the establishment of the LHU Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship will award $1,000 per student to up to four legacy students per year. A legacy student is defined as a child, grandchild, sibling or legally adopted dependent of a Lock Haven University graduate. It will begin being awarded this fall.
“We are happy to support these financial incentives to encourage more legacy students to come to our beloved alma mater where we know they will receive an affordable, top-notch education,” Wright said. “We want to continue our long and storied history of Lock Haven University legacy students following in their relatives’ footsteps.”
“I am looking forward to continuing the great work and momentum the Alumni Association board experienced under Ed Wright’s leadership,” Cruttenden said. “Knowing the strength of the personnel in the LHU Alumni Office and the commitment of our board members, I believe we will continue to be a positive force in promoting Lock Haven University and the importance of alumni staying involved after graduating.”
The LHU Alumni Association's Board of Directors consists of 20 alumni from the 1970’s to the 2010’s and every decade in between. The Board is divided into four committees: Legacy, Development, Campus and Relationships. Each committee works closely with LHU Alumni Office staff to assist in fundraising, marketing, relationship-building and event planning initiatives that support Lock Haven University.
